Germany Ends Scientology Surveillance

After nearly three decades, Germany’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution has ended its systematic federal surveillance of Scientology. The decision is not only important for Scientologists. It is a good day for democracy, for the rule of law, and for freedom of religion or belief in Germany and across Europe.

Germany’s domestic intelligence service, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, known in German as the Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz or BfV, has decided to end the planned federal observation of the Scientology organisation. According to AFP reporting published by Stern, the BfV will no longer treat Scientology as a separate nationwide “phenomenon area” and the organisation will no longer be listed separately in the federal domestic intelligence report.
